Lo Van Minh – The Doctor for Ethnic Minority Communities in Remote Areas

Working in a highland region, Dr. Lo Van Minh, Head of the Emergency Resuscitation – Pediatrics Department at Tram Tau District Medical Center, dedicates himself wholeheartedly to his profession, joining his colleagues in fulfilling their mission of providing healthcare for ethnic minority communities.
After receiving training and acquiring medical knowledge from Hanoi Medical University, Bach Mai Hospital, and Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Dr. Lo Van Minh brought all his expertise and passion to his work.
He shares: "I have introduced several new technical services in emergency resuscitation, anesthesia, surgery, and pediatrics. Each year, I assist in anesthesia and surgery for over 100 cases, provide emergency treatment for more than 200 cases, and care for over 1,500 inpatients in pediatrics. My greatest happiness is successfully performing anesthesia and surgery for severe, complex cases such as ruptured ectopic pregnancies with shock and severe blood loss—procedures that our medical center could not previously handle. Especially rewarding is reviving patients from cardiac arrest and successfully treating severe poisoning cases caused by consuming ‘la ngon’ leaves in suicide attempts, even when they arrive at the hospital late. There is no greater joy than pulling patients back from the brink of death.”
In 2024, Dr. Lo Van Minh led efforts in diabetes diagnosis and treatment, enabling the medical center to provide monthly diabetes medication to patients. This has significantly reduced the costs and burdens on patients who previously had to travel to higher-level hospitals for consultation and treatment. This initiative marks a significant breakthrough in the medical services of Tram Tau District Medical Center.
During patient consultations and treatment, Dr. Lo Van Minh leverages his ethnic background, fluency in local languages, and deep understanding of traditional customs. His friendly and approachable demeanor allows him to gather comprehensive patient information and accurately assess symptoms, leading to more effective treatment plans. He also serves as Vice President of the Young Physicians’ Association at Tram Tau District Medical Center.
In addition to his work in emergency response, medical consultations, and treatment at the district medical center, Dr. Lo Van Minh also advises the leadership on planning volunteer medical programs each year. He collaborates with the Yen Bai Young Physicians’ Association and charitable organizations to provide medical check-ups and treatment for local residents.
Beyond his duties in emergency care and patient treatment, Dr. Lo Van Minh actively contributes to the coordination among departments within the medical center, focusing on public health education. He works to raise awareness among residents about primary healthcare and compliance with disease prevention measures. Additionally, he conducts training sessions for village and commune healthcare workers, as well as local clinics, on maternal and neonatal healthcare at the household level, helping to reduce risks for women and children in the district.
Dr. Minh shares: "In general, people in remote areas lack knowledge about self-care. They often seek medical attention late, relying on rituals, superstitions, or unverified herbal remedies, which negatively impact treatment outcomes. That’s why my colleagues and I are committed to strengthening public health education. We aim to change perceptions and habits regarding healthcare, encouraging timely medical visits and proper treatment to enhance the overall well-being of the local community.”
Despite the challenges posed by limited medical infrastructure in the highland region, Dr. Lo Van Minh, with his sense of responsibility and passion for his profession, continues to contribute alongside his colleagues to advancing healthcare in Tram Tau, achieving remarkable progress and success.
